ASSOCIATED NEWS AGENCY TERMS AND CORE VALUES

Journalism ethics, thouht is a voluntary code of conduct and moral framework that guides reporters and news organizations to gather, verify, and present information responsibly, with ANA, it a core of it existmence. Its main purpose is to maintain public trust and protect integrity by ensuring the news and articles remains truthful, fair, and independent.

These ethics modeled after the recognized Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics

1. Seek Truth and Report It

  • Accuracy First: Always verify facts, cross-check sources, and provide necessary context before publishing; never intentionally distort information.
  • Transparency: Clearly identify original sources, attribute borrowed content, and never commit plagiarism.
  • Distinguish Content: Keep factual news clearly labeled and separate from editorial commentary, advocacy, or advertising.
  • Humanity and Respect: Balance the public’s absolute right to know against the potential harm or discomfort caused to individuals.
  • Protect Vulnerability: Show heightened sensitivity to children, victims of crime, and marginalized communities.
  • Privacy Rights: Respect private individuals’ right to privacy unless an overriding public interest dictates otherwise.
  • Correct Mistakes: Acknowledge errors openly and fix them promptly across all platforms.

Journalism does not grant special immunity or automatic deference to figures of authority so balance deep cultural sensitivity with the public’s right to truthful accountability.

Responsibility framework—is built upon the DNA of history’s most rigorous intellectual traditions.

  • Our Steel-Man Standard of radical fairness is directly adapted from the logical methodology of the philosopher Thomas Aquinas followed worldwide. We are standing on the shoulders of giants to bring true, uncompromising integrity for centuriess back to modern journalism
  • Our Systems approach is built upon the classic communication principles of the Jesuits, who perfected the art of social discernment and care for the individual for centuries.
  • And our commitment to the public interest is drawn directly from universal global frameworks on socio-economic media responsibility.
  • Ethics in Communications, observance from annual messages for World Communications Day which treats journalism as a sacred human vocation with immense moral weight.

Here is how ANA journalists ethically navigate respect for these specific groups:

1. Respecting Parents and Families

  • Privacy in Grief: Avoid interviewing parents during acute trauma or tragedy without explicit, sensitive consent.
  • Protecting Children: Always secure parental permission before interviewing or photographing minors, especially regarding sensitive topics.
  • Family Boundaries: Keep the private lives of a public figure’s parents or children out of the news unless directly relevant to a story.

2. Respecting the Elderly

  • Informed Consent: Ensure elderly sources fully understand how their statements will be used, particularly if they are vulnerable or unfamiliar with modern media.
  • Avoiding Stereotypes: Refine coverage to portray older individuals as diverse, capable, and active, rather than universally frail or dependent.
  • Exploitation Protection: Exercise extreme caution not to exploit older adults who may be experiencing cognitive decline.

3. Respecting Religious Leaders

  • Cultural Context: Accurately represent religious terms, traditions, and the cultural weight of community leaders.
  • Separation of Faith: Report on religious figures objectively, without promoting their specific faith or adopting their religious dogma as factual news.

4. Navigating Cultural and Traditional Systems

  • Local Protocol: Observe local customs (such as seeking permission from tribal elders or community chiefs) when reporting in specific cultural jurisdictions.

FRAMEWORK OF PRINCIPLES

1. The Centrality of the Human Person

  • Dignity Over Metrics: Explicitly warns that media must never treat audiences as a means to an end.

2. Truth as a Moral and Social Debt

  • Absolute Honesty: Condemns all forms of deliberate disinformation, fake news, and propaganda, calling them a “poisoning of the public square.”
  • Contextual Truth: True journalism requires providing the full context of an event. Omitting vital facts to skew a narrative is considered an ethical failure.

3. The Defense of the Common Good

  • Social Responsibility: Journalists have a moral obligation to foster solidarity, peace, and mutual understanding rather than stanning divisions, hatred, or xenophobia.

4. Rejecting Pressure: Journalists must resist pressures that compromise their integrity or turn news into simple entertainment (infotainment).

“The Universal Social Responsibility Standard”

  1. “Public Trust Integrity”
  2. “The Common Good”   – Public Interest
  3. Journalism of Peace”

======================================================================

THE THREE PILLARS OF ANA INTEGRITY

======================================================================

1. THE STEEL-MAN STANDARD (Analytical Fairness)

   • VERIFY FIRST: Accuracy is a public debt. We prioritize complete verification over breaking-news speed.

   • MAXIMUM FAIRNESS: We present our subjects’ most logical image before offering critique. We do not caricature.

   • TRUTH OVER OUTRAGE: We replace clickbait, emotional headlines,  and loaded adjectives with cold data and verified facts.

2. SYSTEMS JOURNALISM (Human-Centric Reporting)

   • ROOT-CAUSE ANALYSIS: Look past surface chaos. Analyze the underlying structural driving the story.

   • CARE FOR THE PERSON: Human dignity is absolute. We do not exploit personal tragedy, grief, or vulnerability for digital traffic.

   • PROTECT THE VULNERABLE: Actively elevate the voices of the marginalized. Secure strict consent when reporting on minors or the elderly.

3. CIVIC HEALTH & INDEPENDENCE (Media Responsibility)

   • INDEPENDENCE: Maintain firewall separation from any parties.

   • EMOTIONAL RESTRAINT: Never publish or post in haste or anger. Review every caption to ensure it serves public clarity, not public division.

   • ACCOUNTABILITY: When we err, we correct it immediately and transparently.
