Nicole Kidman Reveals Awkward Kissing Moment With Alexander Skarsgård in ‘Big Little Lies’
Big Little Lies is making a big little time jump.
Liane Moriarty, who wrote the 2014 book that inspired season one of the HBO series, announced a sequel titled Big Little Truths will hit shelves Aug. 25 and serve as the basis for season three of the show.
Big Little Truths picks back up with the characters—played onscreen by Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz—a whopping 10 years after the death and ensuing investigation of the first novel.
In the new book, the five women’s kids are in high school when an alarming discovery is made.
“Their principal’s office receives a severed finger in the mail,” Liane told USA Today of the plot’s jumping off point. “In the first book, the parents at the school provide the Greek chorus explaining the action and what happened. In this book, the teenagers—the kids—are the Greek chorus. So they’re being interviewed about what happened.”
The author added, “The first thing that happens is they say, ‘Well, it all began at Madeline’s 50th birthday.’”
Meanwhile, a new character enters the picture and unsettles the Monterey Five.

“When a strange man begins lurking around the school asking supposedly innocent questions,” the book’s description says, “this tightly connected group of women must finally face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have and haven’t shared with their kids.”
While Liane said that Big Little Truths will serve as the source material for season three of the TV show—her unpublished novella was the foundation of season two, starring Meryl Streep—she noted to USA Today that she is “very hands off” with the show.
As she put it, “I always said I only ever wanted to be an interested bystander.”
Conversely, Liane admitted that she “can’t pretend” the TV series—which has won eight Emmy Awards, including Supporting Actress for Laura’s performance as Renata Klein—hasn’t impacted her writing.
“It’s all Laura Dern’s fault because she was so amazing as Renata, it was impossible for me to not give her a bigger role also in this book,” she continued. “You couldn’t put Renata in a corner.”
No release date for Big Little Lies season three has been announced by HBO.

Why we’re Excited: Is it really a limited series if it doesn’t have Kidman popping up in it? Thorpe’s book—following the daughter of a former Hooters waitress and a onetime pro-wrestler who turns to OnlyFans after becoming a single mom at 20—is already excellent on its own. But this casting has certainly placed this eight-episode series at the top of the must-watch list.

Why We’re Excited: For starters, we can look no further than Anne, Dakota and Josh.
