Ken Doll’s Real Name Revealed 65 Years Later
What’s in a name?
Well, for world-famous artist Banksy, a pseudonym has been his way of staying anonymous throughout his three-decade career of graffiti-style art full of detailed human subjects and underlying political statements.
However, his attorney is now speaking out after a lengthy investigative report published by Reuters March 13 identified him as Robin Gunningham, a Bristol-born man who changed his name to David Jones around 2008.
In a statement, Banksy’s longtime lawyer Mark Stephens told the outlet the elusive creator “does not accept that many of the details contained within your enquiry are correct” after being presented with findings suggesting that he is Gunningham.
Stephens also emphasized that Banksy’s anonymity is crucial given that he has “been subjected to fixated, threatening and extremist behavior.”
“[Working] anonymously or under a pseudonym serves vital societal interests,” he added. “It protects freedom of expression by allowing creators to speak truth to power without fear of retaliation, censorship or persecution—particularly when addressing sensitive issues such as politics, religion or social justice.”
Banksy’s company Pest Control Office also remained tight-lipped, telling the outlet that the artist “has decided to say nothing.”
And, according to Banksy’s former manager Steve Lazarides, a search for a man named Gunningham would be “a straight dead end.” After all, Lazarides—who did not confirm if Banksy was Gunningham—told Reuters that he had arranged for the artist to change his legal name when the two parted ways in 2008.

“I don’t remember whose idea it was, but I know for a fact it was me that set it all up,” he said. “You make a pact and you keep your word.”
Sharing that there “is no Robin Gunningham,” Lazarides continued, “The name you’ve got I killed years ago.”
While Lazarides declined to disclose Banksy’s new legal moniker, he teased of the identity, “It’s just another name.”
Lazarides added of Banksy, “Life-wise, you’ll never find him.”

The siblings grew up going up by their middle names, which they chose to use when they entered Hollywood: Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning.
As Elle explained, because their mother went by her middle name, it made sense for the sisters to do the same.
“It was awkward in school when they were calling roll call,” she recalled to Glamour in 2016, “because they’d go, ‘Mary? Mary?’ Kids would be like, ‘There’s no Mary here.’ I’d awkwardly raise my hand, like, ‘Uh, it’s me.’”

Sterling Kelby Brown
Sterling K. Brown went by his middle name Kelby until he was a teenager.
“My dad’s name is Sterling Brown Jr., my grandfather is Sterling Brown Sr.,” he said during an April 2025 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show. “I wanted my own name and it felt like Sterling was an old man’s name.”
But years after his dad died from a heart attack, the This Is Us alum decided to revert back to his first name as a way to honor his father.
“Because he passed away when I was 10, by the time I turned 16 and I hadn’t heard his name for five, five-and-a-half years,” he continued. “I was like, ‘I kinda just want to hear that name again.’ So I asked people to call me Sterling.”
