How Sterling K. Brown’s Kids Really Feel About Seeing Him on Billboards (Exclusive)
Sterling K. Brown’s kids are pretty sure he’s a regular dad, not a cool dad.
In fact, the Paradise actor’s sons Andrew, 14, and Amaré, 10—who he shares with wife Ryan Michelle Bathe—don’t even get a thrill when they see their dad on billboards around town.
“This is so crazy, they’re used to it,” Sterling exclusively told E! News’s Will Marfuggi in a joint interview with costar Julianne Nicholson. “I’m not used to it, like it’s cool for me.”
“They just don’t look at the picture. They’ll stay in their phone,” he added. “They’ll be like, ‘Yeah, Dad, I’ve seen it.’ So, I’m like, ‘OK, thanks buddy,’ as I turtle into my little shell.”
Sterling—who returns alongside Julianne in season two of Paradise, which premieres with three episodes Feb. 23—also confessed that while his youngest thinks he’s “slightly cool,” joking the preteen “hasn’t gotten to a jaded place yet,” his older son doesn’t feel quite the same.
“The 14-year-old, he knows I’m cool,” Sterling said, “but will never admit it out loud and will never treat me that way.”
“He kind of understands it like, ‘That is an alright human being,’” Sterling laughed, “but he’s always going to bring me down, and I appreciate that.”

Since becoming a dad, the This Is Us alum has shared what a thrill it’s been for him to watch his sons—especially his eldest—be a better version of themselves than he was at their age.
“I do take great delight in seeing that, ‘Oh, he’s a more mature person than I was at age 14,’” he shared in an August roundtable, per People, “and that’s all you can do is try to do a little bit better than what your parents did for you. And hopefully he’s able to do a little bit better as well.”
Andrew and Amaré are also “the most important people” in his life, a feeling the Emmy winner knows other parents are familiar with.
“Anybody who’s been a parent or even has young children to see how much they change, especially when they’re young, as they accrue new skills and learn new words and stuff,” he said, “it is the most magical thing to be in the presence of.”
