Ashton Kutcher Returns to Acting After 3-Year Hiatus in Shocking Trailer for ‘The Beauty’

Ashton Kutcher will always be a fan of Demi Moore.

While discussing his new series The Beauty, the actor—who was married to Demi from 2005 until their divorce was finalized in 2013—acknowledged the similarities between the Ryan Murphy show and Demi’s film The Substance, while also praising her Oscar-nominated performance.

“Demi’s performance in The Substance, obviously, she got extraordinary accolades,” Ashton told Entertainment Tonight in an interview published Jan. 14. “I’m so proud of her.”

The 47-year-old added, “She killed it.”

Ashton—who shares kids Wyatt, 11, and Dimitri, 9, with wife of 10 years Mila Kunis—has rarely spoken about his marriage to Demi since their split, although he did detail the loneliness he felt after their breakup.

“Right after I got divorced, I went to the mountains for a week by myself,” he shared with Dax Shepard on Armchair Expert in 2018, revealing he spent seven days in Big Sky, Mont. “I did no food, no drink—just water and tea.”

“I took all my computers away, my phone, my everything,” Ashton continued. “I was there by myself, so there was no talking. I just had a notepad, a pen and water and tea—for a week.”

The time alone also prompted him to reflect on not just his relationship with Demi, but also on all of his previous romances.

“I wrote down every single relationship that I had where I felt like there was some grudge or some anything, regret, anything,” he explained. “And I wrote letters to every single person, and on day seven, I typed them all out and then sent them. I handwrote them all and then typed them out and sent them.”

As for Demi, the 63-year-old—who shares daughters Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 34, with ex Bruce Willis—got candid about her split from Ashton while promoting her 2019 memoir Inside Out.

“I lost me,” she told Good Morning America at the time. “If I were to look back, I would say I blinded myself and I lost myself.”

Love at First Bite

Ashton was 25 and Demi was 41 when they met at a casual dinner with friends in 2003, and despite the 16-year age difference the pair immediately connected. Demi reportedly said that she and Ashton talked all night long after the meal.

Leap of Faith

Soon after the pair began dating, Ashton—who grew up in a conservative Roman Catholic home—converted to Kabbalah, a form of Judaism that Demi had recently begun practicing. He became such a devotee that in 2011, his Friends With Benefits costar Natalie Portman shared, “[Ashton] has taught me more about Judaism than I think I have ever learned from anyone else.”

Marriage Talk

In Harper’s Bazaar‘s September 2005 issue, Moore raved about Kutcher: “You talk about meeting your soul mate. I truly feel I have been given that gift.” But she was vague about remarrying, saying, “I feel that we are [married] and that we don’t need something formal, so to do so isn’t a big deal one way or the other. It’s not like we’re holding out.”

A Family Affair

From the start, Ash fit right into the Willis-Moore clan. In fact, Bruce said, “We just hit it off and I think [Ashton] has a great sense of humor.” The whole group got together in support of Rumer’s first major feature role in The House Bunny, at the movie’s Los Angeles premiere in 2008.

Tweethearts

In 2009, Demi and Ashton were some of the first celebs to use the then-new form of social media. Aside from complaining about noisy neighbors, on their fourth wedding anniversary Kutcher tweeted, “Happy anniversary @mrskutcher I’m not sure why we keep track of years in relation 2 an infinite love. But tradition wins 2day.”
