Rob Reiner’s Kids Romy and Jake Break Silence on Parents’ “Horrific” Deaths
Dick Van Dyke’s 100th birthday weekend ended with an unthinkable nightmare.
The Mary Poppins star’s wife of nearly 20 years Arlene Silver shared that he was completely restless upon hearing about Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner’s murders just one day after he celebrated his centennial.
“Dick didn’t sleep last night because he wanted to stay up to know what happened,” Arlene shared in a Dec. 15 Instagram post. “Such a weird, wonderful, awful weekend. I can’t not talk about this horrible thing.”
Indeed, Arlene noted that Dick, who worked closely with Rob’s late father Carl Reiner the ‘60s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show, had maintained a close relationship with the Reiner family until the tragedy struck.
“We talked to Rob two weeks ago on the phone,” Arelene continued. “I have so many messages for Dick’s birthday. It’s going to take me weeks to get over all of them and Michele and Rob’s are in those messages. Dick has known Rob since he was a teenager.”
Meanwhile, Arlene emphasized that she “always felt part of the Reiner family.”
“Rob and Carl were like, the first people I’d ever met with Dick,” Arelene recalled. “Rob and Michele were always together like Dick and I.”
Hours after the bodies of Rob and Michele were found at their California home on Dec. 15, their son Nick Reiner was arrested, with the 32-year-old making his first court appearance since being charged with their murders on Dec. 17.
Arlene, 54, went on to subtly address his arrest, while detailing murders, as well as the late couple’s relationship with Nick as well as his siblings Romy Reiner, 28, and Jake Reiner, 34. (Rob was also dad to Tracy Reiner, 61, from his marriage to Penny Marshall.)

“They did everything for that kid,” Arlene emphasized. “They loved their kids.”
Dick was just one entertainer who was touched by the When Harry Met Sally director’s life. His close friends and collaborators Billy Crystal, Larry David and Martin Short shared a joint statement nodding to his craft and character.
“Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner,” the statement to the Associated Press read. “Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens. They were a special force together-dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”
Similarly, Meg Ryan echoed the sentiment toward Rob and Michele, and tried to find a semblance of peace amid the tragic loss.
“I have to believe that their story will not end with this impossible tragedy, that some good may come, some awareness raised,” she wrote in a Dec. 17 Instagram statement. “I don’t know, but my guess is that they would want that to be hopeful and humane, to be something that brings us all to a greater understanding of one another and to some peace.”

The actress, who Rob Reiner adopted during his marriage to late ex Penny Marshall, said she saw her dad at a family gathering the day before he and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in an apparent homicide at their Los Angeles home.

The Stand By Me actor learned of his director’s death through costar Jerry O’Connell, writing on his website Dec. 15 that he was “still processing and coming to grips with a tragic, senseless, devastating loss.”

The family of the late television icon released an emotional statement noting how close the duo were.
“The Lear Family is devastated by the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner,” they told Deadline. “Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world.”
“Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place,” the statement continued, “and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends.
