The shooting was reported around 12:23 a.m. Officers arrived to find a Hispanic man in his 30s suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts from officers and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.

Investigators say the victim was part of a group of at least four people — two men and two women, all Hispanic and between 25 and 30 years old — who had been spending time near the pier parking lot before walking south toward the 5100 block of Narragansett Avenue, close to the shoreline.

After the shots were fired, the group reportedly returned to the pier lot, got into two vehicles — described as a white sedan and a blue or gray SUV — and drove east on Newport Avenue. Police say one of the vehicles may have struck another car while leaving the area.

Homicide detectives responded to the scene and are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security footage from nearby businesses and homes.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact the SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 888-580-8477.
