SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler is putting his stamp on professional sports in San Diego, but the six-time NBA All-Star has his sights set on a game other than hoops.

It was announced Monday that Butler has joined San Diego Wave FC as a minority investor.

“Soccer has been a passion of mine for a long time, and being part of the game in a meaningful way has always been a dream,” Butler said in a press release. “San Diego has become a city close to my heart, and I’m proud to invest in a Club that is pushing boundaries, building something lasting.”

Butler also said in the release that he aims to set a new standard for what women’s sports can be in San Diego, on and off the field.

“Jimmy is a competitor and visionary who shares our values and our ambition to grow this Club,” Lauren Leichtman, Controlling Owner of San Diego Wave FC, said in the release. “He brings a global perspective, a deep respect for the athlete’s journey, and a creative spirit that perfectly complements what we are building here at Wave FC.”

The Olympic gold medalist is also no stranger to dabbling in entrepreneurship, as he is the founder of BIGFACE, a specialty coffee brand that offers the “universe’s finest coffee.” Select flavors of his coffee brand include Doublestar and Earthshine, while merchandise and apparel are also sold online on the coffee brand’s website.

Known by his nickname “Jimmy Buckets,” Butler purchased a mansion in Poway in 2020 that is estimated to be worth $6.6 million, and had been the former home of Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.

Fittingly, Butler’s mansion comes complete with its own coffee shop and, of course, a basketball court.

Butler tipped off his 15th NBA campaign in stunning fashion during Tuesday’s season opener, putting up 31 points in the Warriors’ 119-109 nail-biting victory over the host Los Angeles Lakers. This is Butler’s second season with the Warriors after spending six seasons in Miami with the Heat.
