SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — After committing to Penn State in the summer of 2024, Mission Hills quarterback Troy Huhn announced Thursday that he has reopened his recruitment and officially decommitted from the program, according to the signal-caller’s social media.

The 6-foot-4 San Marcos native has thrown for 1,432 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, and the dual-threat senior has also tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Huhn officially committed to Penn State in 2024 and, according to On3 Sports, he attended multiple Penn State games last season, including one as recently as Sept. 27, when Penn State fell 30-24 to Oregon.

Huhn’s announcement comes in the wake of the firing of Penn State Head Coach James Franklin, who was let go on Sunday after coaching the Nittany Lions for 12 seasons. The announcement was made after Penn State lost its last three games and committed six penalties in the first half against Northwestern on Saturday. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar also suffered a season-ending injury that game.

Huhn, however, has a vast selection to choose from when deciding which program he will commit to now. With offers from highly renowned suitors such as Texas, Ohio State and Michigan, the 4-star recruit will still have his pick of the litter. He even has the opportunity to stay local, as SDSU has also sent him an offer.

While it has not been officially confirmed whether Huhn’s decision is based solely on Franklin’s recent firing from Penn State, speculation about his decommitment centers on the college program’s surprising announcement.

The 6-1 Mission Hills Grizzlies travel to Torrey Pines on Friday to take on the Falcons, with Huhn perhaps playing with a chip on his shoulder in the wake of recent developments.
