SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC) received two awards recognizing its positive contributions to the community.

Programs to help families displaced from their homes in January 2024 due to flooding, as well as a community garden that allows low-income seniors access to fresh fruits and vegetables, earned the SDHC two Awards of Merit from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO).

“These honors reflect our ongoing focus on the people in our community and our commitment to collaborate with a variety of partners to achieve positive results,” SDHC President and CEO Lisa Jones said.

For victims of the January 2024 floods, the SDHC provided assistance until the County of San Diego’s emergency resources became available, providing temporary housing for more than 300 households. They also established the Flood Recovery Program for Displaced Residents, which assisted more than 400 families in finding stable housing.

SDHC’s Belden Village affordable housing building for seniors with low income created a community garden, helping the residents access fresh fruits and vegetables. According to SDHC, the community garden has led to residents being more engaged.

The awards were presented at NAHRO’s National Conference and Exhibition in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sept. 27.
