NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Drivers can expect to see more law enforcement on the roads in the South Bay this weekend.

The National City Police Department’s Traffic Unit will be checking for people driving under the influence on Saturday, Sept. 20. Officers will specifically be on the lookout for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing, the department stated.

The checkpoint will be starting at 6 p.m.

According to NCPD, checkpoints are placed in locations based on how many DUI arrests have been made in those areas as well as collision statistics.

NCPD reminds people to keep the following tips in mind to ensure a night of fun does not involve a DUI:

  • Designate a sober driver (friend, rideshare, cab or public transportation) to get home
  • Help someone who appears to be impaired find a safe and sober way home
  • Report drunk drivers by calling 911
  • Offer non-alcoholic drinks at a party. Monitor those who are drinking and know how they are getting home

Anyone caught driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can expect to pay upwards of $13,500, which includes fines, fees, DUI classes, a suspended license and more. DUI drivers may also expect to spend time in jail, according to NCPD.
