Six weeks after his mother, Holly Hatcher, was killed in her Virginia home by an armed intruder, the country singer shared a message to his fans about the tragedy.

“I just want to take a moment to say thank you to you all for all the love and support that you all have shown me and my family over the last month,” he said in a video posted on his YouTube channel Sept. 9. “You all sent so many loving comments and messages and made posts, and we did our best to read them. But I just want you all to know how appreciative we are, and I am of you all.”

Noting that the period since the murder “has really been the worst time of our life” for him and his family, the 28-year-old revealed he plans to move forward with his career because it’s “what my mom would want me to do.”

“I’ve made the decision that I 100 percent want to continue making music and bringing smiles to people’s faces and being out on stage,” he continued. “I’m not going to quit. I’m going to keep on going. I’m going to go as hard as I possibly can, like I always have. And I want you all to come along on this journey with me as I get back into it.”

Spencer added that he intends to honor the commitments he made prior to his mom’s death.

“We’re gonna go back to the schedule that we had, we’re gonna go out to these radio stations, we’re gonna keep going back out and playing shows,” he shared. “My mom was real excited about all the opportunities and all the music, and I hope that you all are just as excited about it as she was.”

Holly, a Virginia schoolteacher, died Aug. 3 at age 62 after an intruder—whom police later identified as 41-year-old Kevin Walker—entered her home and fatally stabbed her, according to Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson. Walker then attacked her husband Michael Hatcher, who retrieved a handgun from his car during the altercation and fired a single shot, killing the trespasser.

“There’s no way for you to know the trauma and the pain and the unanswered questions that I have had [and] that my three sons, Dane, Spencer and Connor have had,” Michael said in a joint video statement with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office days after the incident. “Each of you have made it much more bearable through your outpouring of love and your caring and your kindness and support to all of us, and for that, I thank you so much.”
