SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A new 3D printing company has opened its doors in Mira Mesa, specializing in building drones for the U.S. military.

Firestorm Labs says its technology could reshape how drones and other defense equipment are produced. At the company’s new facility, massive 3D printers can create drone parts in as little as nine hours, with full assembly completed in just over a day.

“This is about moving the factory closer to the fight,” said co-CEO Dan Magy. “With 3D printers, you can produce drones at scale, hundreds at a time, like the big defense companies.”

Magy added that instead of waiting weeks or months to ship equipment overseas, Firestorm’s approach would allow manufacturing to happen closer to the battlefield.

A memo from the Secretary of War in July warned that U.S. drone production is falling behind rival nations due to regulatory obstacles.

Firestorm Labs says it already has more than $100 million in contracts across the Department of War and that its technology is being used on the battlefield in Ukraine.
