CHULA Vista, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Mayor John McCann of Chula Vista asked residents to participate in Tuesday’s City Council meeting to discuss the proposed “Pangaea” project.

The plan, still in its early stages, would transform more than 100 acres of waterfront land — including the site of the former South Bay Power Plant at 990 Bay Blvd. — into a sprawling complex featuring a professional tennis facility, a Tiger Woods-branded PopStroke golf center, a 50,000-seat stadium for major sporting events, an IMAX theater, three hotels, and multiple shops and restaurants.

“We can double the amount of athletic fields in the City of Chula Vista and we still wouldn’t have enough. We are a soccer, baseball community. This gives us more opportunity to be able to help youth sports and to be able to draw in semi-professional and professional opportunities as well,” said McCann.

McCann is asking for residents to share their feedback.

Some have already expressed concerns about the environmental impact on wildlife, overdevelopment in that area and congestion.

“We want to make sure the community understands and has input on the project.”

Mayor McCann says the city received many proposals from developers, but have chosen the McGarey Group who’ve been behind well known projects nationwide.
