Fire crews were able to stop the forward progress of a 400-acre brush fire that broke out on Camp Pendleton Saturday afternoon. The fire has prompted road closures on the Marine Corps Base.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A several hundred acre brush fire was burning on Camp Pendleton Saturday and road closures were in place on the Marine Corps Base.

The brush fire — dubbed the Charger Fire — broke out around 3:30 p.m. Saturday near Basilone Road and Las Pulgas Road on Camp Pendleton, according to a spokesperson with the Marine Corps Base.

The brush fire was first reported to be burning around 200 acres. Forward progress on the fire was stopped around 6:30 p.m. at 400 acres with Camp Pendleton Fire crews reporting 20% containment.

The Marine Corps Base Saturday evening closed Basilone Road from Robillard Road to Las Pulgas Road until further notice due to the brush fire.

The Marine Corps Base reports the fire is not currently threatening personnel or infrastructure on base and that no evacuations have been ordered.

The latest base advisories, including road closures, gate closures and lane closures, can be found at pendleton.marines.mil.

This latest brush fire comes amid the heat advisories and extreme heat warnings that have been issued for the region this week, bringing with it a higher fire risk as the moisture levels in the dry brush drop.

In anticipation of increased fire activity due to the heat, combined with lightning strikes and wind, Governor Newsom has pre-deployed additional firefighting resources across the state. Saturday evening, Newsom tweeted California has recorded more than 3,300 lightning strikes in the past 24 hours.
