Emmanuel Haro Case: Police Confront Mom of 7-Month-Old Over “Inconsistencies” in Kidnapping Story

For Rebecca Haro, the final hours before 7-month-old son Emmanuel Haro‘s disappearance felt surprisingly mundane.

She was at a park in Yucaipa, Calif., with her baby boy, his father Jake Haro and their two other kids around 7 p.m. on Aug. 14 for their older son’s football practice, she told KTLA 5. Afterwards, she continued, she drove to a nearby Big 5 Sporting Goods store with Emmanuel to purchase a mouthguard and noticed his diaper needed to be changed, laying him next to his car seat to clean him up.

What she says happened next is where things truly become a mess. “I was gonna get the diaper and somebody said, ‘Hola.’ And I didn’t see nothing since,” Rebecca told the outlet Aug. 15, saying she was knocked out, got a black eye and woke to find the infant gone. “I woke up right here on the floor, and I didn’t see Emmanuel.”

Rebecca said she then looked around her car, rushed into the store and called the police. That’s when authorities began their search for Emmanuel, noting the approximately 21-pound baby was last seen wearing a black Nike onesie, “is approximately 24 inches tall, has brown hair, brown eyes, and is cross-eyed.”

Days in, though, their search has yielded more questions than answers.

“Based on the evidence, investigators determined a kidnapping in Yucaipa did not occur,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department stated in an Aug. 22 Instagram post. “It is believed Emmauel is deceased and the search to recover his remains is ongoing.”

On Aug. 22, Rebecca and Jake were arrested on a murder charge.

“Arrest warrants were obtained from the Riverside County Superior Court and on August 22, 2025, detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homicide Detail and Specialized Enforcement Division arrested Jake and Rebecca Haro at their residence in Cabazon, for PC 187 – Murder,” the sheriff’s department continued in their post. “Both suspects were booked in a Riverside County jail without bail. No other arrests have been made, and no suspects remain outstanding. While these arrests mark a significant development, our focus remains on finding Emmanuel.”

E! News has reached out to lawyers for Rebecca and Jake and has yet to hear back, but they have stressed that finding their baby remains top priority.

San Bernardino County Sheriff

The sheriff’s department previously confirmed it was dispatched to the retail location at 7:47 p.m. on Aug. 14 after Rebecca reported “she was physically assaulted by an unknown male and rendered unconscious” while changing her baby’s diaper in the parking lot. But questions arose after investigators interviewed Emmanuel’s parents.

“During those interviews, Rebecca was confronted with inconsistencies in her initial statement and declined to continue with the interview,” the sheriff’s department said in an Aug. 16 release. “At this point in the investigation, investigators are unable to rule out foul play in the disappearance of Emmanuel.”

Before Rebecca and Jake’s Aug. 22 arrest, the sheriff’s department revealed it served several search warrants at the Haro home in Cabazon, deployed K9 units, reviewed surveillance footage and seized Jake’s car for any potential evidence.

Jake’s attorney Vincent Hughes told the Los Angeles Times his client is cooperating and that the couple also surrendered their phones to investigators, allowed them into their home and had other electronic devices—including two iPads and three Xboxes—obtained by authorities.

“Jake has and continues to state that law enforcement is free to come, free to look around,” Vincent noted to the newspaper Aug. 19. “They haven’t ran. I want to make sure that the public is aware they have not gone anywhere. They’re still in the family home, scared for their safety.”

As for the “inconsistencies” in Rebecca’s statements, Vincent attributed them to her being overcome with emotion following Emmanuel’s disappearance. He also said she refused to take a lie detector test when asked by authorities.

“No attorney in their right mind would allow that to happen,” Vincent added to the outlet, “and no person should ever consent to a lie detector test when it’s not even scientifically proven to be admissible in court.”

This isn’t the Haro family’s first encounter with law enforcement. According to the Los Angeles Times, citing court records, Jake was convicted of willful child cruelty in 2023 for an incident involving a child in Hemet. However, his attorney affirms this case has no relation to Emmanuel’s disappearance.

“Jake has a criminal past,” he acknowledged to the publication. “We’re not running from that, but the facts of that case are a lot different than the facts of this case. And one crime doesn’t mean that you’ve committed every other crime known to man, especially to take your own child.”

For now, investigators continue their search for Emmanuel. Two days before Jake and Rebecca’s arrest, the sheriff’s department told KTLA 5 there was a possible sighting of the baby somewhere in Kern County.

“Our investigators have followed up on the reported sightings of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro, but he has not yet been located,” the sheriff’s department continued in a separate statement Aug. 20, “While Emmanuel’s father has retained an attorney, if the parents choose to work with detectives, we welcome their cooperation as we continue efforts to locate Emmanuel.”

As for a fire that was reported at a property near the Haro home, the sheriff’s department noted they “have been in contact with the investigators of that incident.”

“At this time, we have no information indicating the fire is related, and we will continue to communicate with fire investigators as their investigation progresses,” they added Aug. 20. “Emmanuel continues to be the main focus of this investigation, and we will continue our efforts to locate him.”

Authorities have also expressed their appreciation for everyone who has worked on the case.

“The circumstances surrounding this investigation are tragic and we will continue to search for Emmanuel,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus added in the Aug. 22 post. “I want to thank members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office, Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the community, and media for bringing attention to this case. I trust our justice system will hold the parents accountable.”
