SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — California Highway Patrol will be setting up a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, in an unincorporated area of San Diego County, officials announced earlier this week.

The checkpoint will be active from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Monday, and aims to remove impaired drivers from the road while also educating the public on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, CHP officials explained in a press release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive enforcement can reduce impaired driving crashes by up to 20%. CHP says checkpoints like this one serve three primary goals: deterrence, removal of impaired drivers, and public awareness.

From 2016 to 2020, more than 12,000 people were killed or injured in alcohol-related crashes in San Diego County alone. Statewide, the number jumps to over 194,000, according to CHP data.

The area selected for this weekend’s checkpoint has seen more than 40 DUI arrests and three DUI-related collisions between January 2022 and May 2024.

Drivers passing through the checkpoint will be briefly stopped and screened for signs of impairment. Officers will also check for valid driver’s licenses. Specially trained officers will also be on hand to evaluate drivers suspected of drug impairment.

Officials are reminding the public that driving under the influence — whether of alcohol, legal drugs, or illegal substances — is a critical mistake that can lead to serious injury or death.

This checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
