A skyscraper with a tiered, masonry facade designed by architecture studio Robert A M Stern Architects and informed by buildings of the Upper East Side is under construction in Manhattan.
Developed by local developer Naftali Group, 255 East 77th Street is set to reach 36 storeys and 500 feet (152 metres) once completed and will contain 62 luxury condominiums, as well as amenity spaces designed by interior studio Yabu Pushelberg.
According to Robert A M Stern Architects (RAMSA), the skyscraper’s facade will feature “sculpted details” including carved wildflowers informed by the architecture and wildlife of the surrounding Upper East Side neighbourhood.
“Robert A M Stern Architects delights yet again at 255 East 77 with a tower that pays homage to the great classical apartment buildings on the Upper East Side, while acknowledging the rhythm of life today,” said the team for the building’s website.
“The ground-up condominium features a classic masonry facade adorned with subtle sculpted details, including carved oak leaf motifs that honor a species native to the nearby Central Park and Carl Schurz Park on the East River waterfront.”
Renderings of the building show a tiered tower atop a six-storey podium. The tower steps back as it rises. Along its facade are rectangular windows, punctuated by rows of double-height, arched ones.
Geometric engravings will be etched onto select areas of the facade.
It will contain an indoor swimming pool on an upper level in a barrel-ceilinged double-height space and other amenities such as fitness areas and a recording studio.
The interiors, also designed by RAMSA, will feature white oak flooring and a predominantly white and neutral colour palette as shown in renders.
The project is expected to top out at the end of April, with completion set for late 2026.
Other skyscrapers under construction in Manhattan include a “Beaux-arts” supertall skyscraper by KPF and a glass tower in Midtown Manhattan designed by C3D Architecture.
Recently, a local group also pushed forward a classical design for the redevelopment of Penn Station, in line with renewed advocacy for classical styles spurred by executive orders requiring classical and traditional forms for federal architecture.
