The San Diego International Airport Authority has opened a new three-lane roadway with no stop lights or intersections leading to the airport.

SAN DIEGO (FOX5/KUSI)–Travelers heading to the airport can take a new route besides Harbor Drive starting on Friday.

A new roadway with three new lanes and no stop lights or intersections will lead to the airport as a way for faster travel, according to the San Diego International Airport Authority.

It’s one of the first results of the Terminal 1 redevelopment project that began at the end of 2021.

A driver who ferries passengers to and from the airport said he and his team are looking forward to the change—and believe it could mean a smoother ride for their clients.

“This whole experience is going to be exactly what the city needs,” said David Blake, driver for Stay Classy Transportation.

Blake has been a driver for Stay Classy Transportation for over a decade. He said the new route could make his job a little easier.

“I think it’s more smoother for the public than for us, so we’ll just be a part of that smoothness for them,” he said.

The new lanes will be off of Harbor Drive, just north of Laurel.

The Airport Authority reports that signage will direct drivers to bear right to head to the airport.

Blake and his drivers are preparing for the new route by following tutorials on how to use the new lanes.

He tells other drivers to plan and to pay attention to signs.

The entire Terminal 1 redevelopment project is set to be completed in September.

It will also include a brand new Terminal 1, improvements to the airfield and more.
