Ozzy Osbourne’s sisters Jean Powell and Gillian Hemming are carrying on his legacy.

Hours after it was confirmed that the Black Sabbath frontman—real name John Michael Osbournedied at 76 years old following a yearslong battle with Parkinson’s disease, his older sisters shared insight into their final sibling reunion at the band’s July 5 farewell show at England’s Villa Park.

“It was upsetting because he could not stand up straight,” Jean, 85, who attended his final performance alongside Ozzy’s wife Sharon Osbourne and daughter Kelly Osbourne, told The Mirror in a joint interview published July 23, “but he was still our John, still cracking the jokes.”

For that reason, she and Gillian were in disbelief about his passing.

“He was frail, but it still came as a shock,” Jean continued, adding that while they didn’t know the details of his death, they were “thankful he died in England.”

Along with getting to spend his final weeks in England, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer—who is also survived by brother Paul Osbourne—was able to reunite with bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for one last set as well as witnessing his daughter Kelly get engaged to her fiancé Sid Wilson backstage.

“I got a text from him as he drove down Lodge Road, where we used to live near the stadium,” Jean recalled of that night. “He said he couldn’t believe all the crowds were walking down our old street to watch him perform.”

Because while many may remember Ozzy as the legendary rocker or The Osbournes alum, his family remembers him as so much more.

“To us, he was our brother, not a celebrity,” Jean expressed, “so it’s crazy to see the outpouring of love since his death was announced. We just can’t believe he is gone, and we won’t be getting another phone call or text from him. Every week without fail he would get in touch.”

Even while she was enjoying his final performance earlier this month, Jean and Ozzy were already making plans to see each other again.

“We had an executive box in the stadium, and when I saw the sea of people waiting to see our John, I just broke down,” she told the outlet. “We didn’t really get a chance to chat much because it was such a chaotic visit. But in his last text to me, he said he would be coming to Birmingham again. We were hoping to see him this week.”

For her part, Gillian, 80, gushed about how genuine her little brother was—even amid all the fame.

“We were proud as punch about him and everything he achieved,” Jean said. “But it never went to his head. What the public saw of John was exactly what he was like in real life. It wasn’t an act. He was just great.”

“He was just our John,” she added. “He used to make us laugh all the time. That’s what I’ll always remember.”

Ozzy, born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, in 1948, struggled with school early on. It was his passion for music that ultimately helped him move forward.

“I left school with a little more education than when I first started going,” he told The Associated Press in 2010. “Because of my dyslexia, I couldn’t learn. So, I was teased a lot by one of my sister about not bing able to read. It’s very shameful.”

“If it wasn’t for The Beatles turning me onto music in a big way, I don’t know what I would have done,” he continued. “Music has been the main thing that got me out of the area, the place I was born.”

In 1968, he and his friends formed Black Sabbath, inspired by the film of the same name, with their self-titled debut album earning major commercial success. In 1971, he married his first wife Thelma Riley, with whom he shared kids Jessica Osbourne, Louis Osbourne and Elliot Kingsley.

Ozzy was happy to sink his teeth into a macabre photo shoot. He was fired from Black Sabbath the year before due to his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse.

“Money would be the alcohol and the drugs and I behaved badly,” he said in his documentary Biography: The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne of that time. “That was one of the lowest points of my life.”

Ozzy—as a solo artist—took the stage at Madison Square Garden for his Diary of a Madman tour, just two days after he infamously bit into a dead bat that was thrown onto the stage, which he believed was fake.

“I just thought it was a rubber bat,” Ozzy said in the documentary, “and I just put it in my mouth and crunched down. I just f–king bit into it, you know, being the f–king clown that I am [and was like], ‘Oh no! It’s real.'”

Later that year, he married his manager, Sharon Arden.

Ozzy looked back at his star-studded life, realizing that he had done a lot during his 50-year career.

“I never thought I’d make it this far,” he told Rolling Stone in 2018 while reflecting on his career. “I don’t understand why I’m alive still after the hell-raising days. I guess whoever the man is upstairs, if there even is one, wants me to stick around.”
