Salon owners and clients in Rancho Peñasquitos are concerned that a new bike lane on Black Mountain Road is causing a parking nightmare.

(FOX 5/KUSI) — Beth Sczempka, the owner of Tease Salon in Rancho Peñasquitos, says a new bike lane along a stretch of Black Mountain Road is causing a parking nightmare.

“Thank goodness they’re repaving our roads, but they decided to pave Black Mountain Road and when they relined the road, they put in a bike lane,” said Sczempka.

Sczempka says that the area served as parking for 30-plus cars of clients and workers in her business complex, who now need to find another spot.

“People are going to be walking across busy streets with fast-moving cars and I just feel like it’s a total danger for everybody involved,” said Sczempka.

“Even when it was normal, no bike lane, no anything, it’s been hard to find parking,” said Deana Mordick, Tease Salon Nail Tech.

Salon workers are worried about their clients being able to find a spot, especially those in need of a handicap space.

Long-time client, Melissa Currey, says her disabled mother goes to the chiropractor in the same complex and relies on handicap space availability.

“She might have to cancel her appointments, which is really heartbreaking because she goes to the chiropractor, she depends on that twice a week,” said Melissa Currey, Tease Salon Client.

Sczempka thinks a better solution would be to have the bike lane widened on the west side, allowing for bike traffic in both directions and parking on the east side, or for it to be eliminated.

“That’s the only solution I see because you can’t magically create parking spots,” said Sczempka.

Sczempka says that within the last week, she has reached out to local representatives with her concerns. We reached out to Marni von Wilpert’s office and are waiting for a response.
